Sheets fit for a King?

King is one of the most popular sizes of beds in the US.  Why do we love our Kings?? We searched to find the answer.  Firstly, we do a lot in our beds, (like working and watching TV), and, secondly, we have a lot of company (kids, partners and pets). Many of us  know who is the king (or queen) of our castles - and that one often has 4 legs! (like my little Daisy!) 

Approximately 85 million households have pets and surveys indicate that more than half of pet owners sleep with their pets.  And don't worry - a recent NY Times study says it doesn't generally interfere with your sleep or your pets' and some data show it can be good for you!

So once you have the King size bed to fit all your activities and bodies, finding king size sheets or king bedding is not as easy as it should be. There is a lot of well deserved confusion on the different bed options which include the word “KING” in the US and around the world.  Read on below so you can start sleeping well right away on the perfect size sheet.

Let’s start with a few definitions, and then see the measurements for many king varieties in the US and around the world in the table below.


This is the standard popular US/Canada King Size, used in approximately 25% of US bedrooms, measuring 76 inches wide by 80 inches long (193x203 cm). Great for a couple, plus some kids, dogs and cats! (QuickZip carries these! Shop here)

California King, Western or Long King, is a longer and narrower king size mattress;  in the US and Canada it is sized 72 inches wide by 84 inches long (183×213cm). 84 inches = 7 feet, so this size is perfect for taller people or it provides plenty of pet room at the foot and will fit better in certain rooms depending on the room layout. A SPLIT KING/DUAL KING is comprised of two TwinXL sized mattresses on separate foundations or box springs, usually in one bed frame. Each TwinXL mattress measures approximately 38 inches wide by 80 inches long (97 x 203 cm).  The measurement of the split king mattress as a whole is approximately 76 inches x 80 inches (193 x 203 cm), so the frame is generally similar to a king bed and some Split King-ers choose to use a King-size fitted sheet over the two mattresses, and often king-sized bedding as covers (top sheets, blankets, duvets and covers.  (QuickZip carries these! Adjustable beds lie on a mattress foundation that raises and lowers at the head and/or foot ends. The bend points are also referred to as articulation points (e.g. head and foot articulation, pillow tilt articulation). Powered by electricity, the newest models may also include USB ports, lighting, massage and temperature control.

The half split adjustable (head split, flex top or split top) is one mattress that is split only at the head end and offers many of the same features as adjustable. It is designed for use with adjustable bases.  Sheets for these half splits are often available from the mattress manufacturers and retailers.
