According to the Safe to Sleep research jointly published by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), "loose bedding can obstruct an infant's airway, posing a suffocation risk and increasing risk for SIDS."

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has also issued warnings about loose crib bedding (Safety Alert 5137). The CPSC's Safe Sleep Crib Safety campaign is aimed at helping parents "avoid suffocation, strangulation and entrapment risks in the sleep environment." According to the CPSC, "Soft bedding may be a major contributor to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS." The CPSC says that "as many as one-third of the babies who die from SIDS each year may have suffocated when placed on top of soft bedding."

The CPSC recommends using a "tight-fitted bottom sheet" that will not pop off the mattress and to "make sure crib sheets fit snugly on a crib mattress."
